About — A Honduran’s Guide to Expat Life

Most expat blogs are written by someone who arrived a few years ago, figured some things out, and started writing about it. This one is different.

My name is Bernie. I was born and raised in Honduras. I’m not an expat — I’m the guy who’s been here the whole time, watching hundreds of expat families arrive, settle in, struggle with the same questions, and eventually fall in love with this place the way I always have.

24 Years of Watching Expats Move to Honduras

For over two decades I’ve run Mudanzas Gamundi, one of Honduras’s most established international relocation companies. We’ve moved families from the US, Canada, Europe, and beyond — into Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Roatán, and every expat community in between.

In that time I’ve heard every question, seen every mistake, and watched what actually makes the difference between a smooth transition and a stressful one. The neighborhoods that look good online but feel wrong when you get here. The banks that work for foreigners and the ones that don’t. The visa categories nobody explains clearly. The real monthly budgets — not the $500/month fantasy you’ll find on other sites.

That knowledge is what this site is built on.

What You’ll Find Here

This isn’t a travel blog. I’m not trying to sell you on Honduras — if you’re reading this, you’re probably already seriously considering it. What I want to give you is the honest, specific information that most sites skip over because they’re too worried about being controversial or they simply don’t know.

  • Real cost of living numbers — what expats in different income brackets actually spend
  • Visa and residency guides — the Pensionado, Rentista, and Inversionista categories explained plainly
  • Neighborhood breakdowns — which areas expats actually choose and why
  • Banking and finances — how to move money, which banks open accounts for foreigners, and what tools work
  • Healthcare — the private hospital system, what it costs, and how to get covered
  • Moving logistics — what to bring, what to leave, what customs will and won’t let through

The Local Perspective

I’m Honduran. My family is Honduran. My team at Gamundi is Honduran. That means I’ll tell you things that expat bloggers can’t — not because they’re hiding anything, but because they genuinely don’t know. We know which mechanic won’t take advantage of you. We know which gated community actually has reliable electricity. We know which visa lawyer is worth the money and which one will drag the process out for months.

That’s the insider access you get here. Not curated, not promotional — just honest information from someone who’s been on the ground for all of it.
